Cut To The Chase: We're Parents! & CD Is 39 (Again)

Proud Parents
Originally uploaded by jakeyd.

Last night and this morning we practiced the answers to all the questions Galina told us might be asked:

  • What was the process you have undergone so far? [Galina: Be specific, using dates, citing the language from your petition, and acknowledging Otis’ very significant health difficulties. Remember – your first visit to the BH was on the 21st, and you saw three children.] [CD to Mel – Note no revisionist history here!]
  • How did you choose Rachman?
  • Can you deal with Rachman’s health condition? How?
  • Explain why you’d want to adopt an infant at your ages.
  • Why are you adopting from Kazakhstan as opposed to (a) some other country or (b) the United States? [Galina: Our agency recommended KZ, and Candace has a colleague who adopted successfully from KZ. In the US there are more prospective parents than children, so given our ages, the wait would have been too long.] [CD: Galina was highly unmoved by my statement that almost all of these answers were untrue. We of course prepared to answer it Galina’s way.]
  • What will happen to Rachman if you die young….. not unlikely given your health condition?
  • What childcare arrangements have you made? [Galina: Candace will say that she is going to take six months off, then work part time and hire a nanny.] [CD: Again, this is, at best, half true. It also seems weird since all KZ women seem to work, including when they have young children. But see above re doing it Galina’s way.]
  • Why are American parents so often abusive of their adopted children? [DJ: I’ll say this for Galina, it is a lawyer’s job to prepare his/her clients for the absolute worst that can happen. However, it’s usually phrased something like: “It’s unlikely that this will happen, but it’s my duty to tell you that…..”]

We got pretty good at our answers. Therefore, it was to be expected that none of these questions was asked. Instead……..

We had an 11 AM appointment. It was already in the 90’s when we arrived at court 15 minutes early. We are in the bungalow district described yesterday; court itself is a nondescript building that looks a little like one of those elementary schools that were built all over the US in the ‘70’s. As with all courts everywhere, there is a crowd milling outside that appears to be that everywhere-the-same mix of civil litigants, defendants, families, cops, lawyers, judges, and staff. This is a neighborhood/local court, in which, as in Mass., both civil and criminal cases are heard, albeit of fairly minor significance (except to those involved!) with, again as in Mass., an automatic right of appeal to a city-wide court. Presumably also as in Mass., the dispositions are structured to ensure few appeals.

We’re waiting for Galina to show up with the doctor from the orphanage and the representative of the Ministry of Education. At 10:59, Galina shows up with the doctor. We head up to a third floor (walk-up) courtroom and wait in the hall outside. Galina calls the Ministry of Education and is told the rep is on the way. She explains that we are also waiting for the People’s Prosecutor.

A few minutes later a tall, fifty-five-ish man with a full head of silver hair and a small but noticeable gut lopes past, wearing early Andy Sipowicz: yellow double knit, short sleeved shirt with blue and pink striped polyester tie; pale blue pants; and white belt with matching Kazakh square pointed shoes. That’s the Judge, says Galina, in fact, the Chief Judge of the court. He looks, CD thinks, like a thousand small town (especially southern) elected officials in the US, except that he’s a Kazakh. CD finds this very comforting.

At 11:25, no Ministry rep, no Prosecutor. DJ has sweated through his undershirt and shirt and can feel his collar getting damp. He is getting very cranky; fortunately (?), Zoya ascribes this to nerves. DJ asks Galina if the missing folks are coming from Astana, Zoya laughs and says, “New York!” the judge’s secretary comes out to complain about the delay, Galina gets her cell phone out again.

At 11:40, the Education rep shows - not the somewhat scary woman who interviewed us, but a young cute guy who smiles and winks at CD. Again, CD finds this comforting, and DJ grumbles some more.

We’re ushered into a combination Courtroom/Chambers, Judge greets us, tells us it’s going to be a couple of minutes until the Prosecutor arrives. He starts going through files on his desk. After a minute or so, he looks up at us and asks his secretary to turn on the air conditioner. After another minute or so, he picks up his cell phone, and, as far as we can tell, calls the Prosecutor and says: “Get your ass here, because I’m starting. I’ve got a noon lunch meeting.” Judge reads our petition aloud, asks us to stand up, and asks us:

“Are you sure you want to adopt this child? You won’t change your mind later?”

DJ, whom we’ve agreed will be the spokesperson, says, “Yes, I’m sure. No, I won’t change my mind later.”

Judge asks, “Why do you want to adopt? Why don’t you just have your own biological children?”

DJ starts to reply when Prosecutor (50-ish, nicely dressed Russian woman) comes rushing in.

Judge asks orphanage doctor what she thinks, she reads Rachman’s diagnosis and says we are A-OK with her; cute guy from Ministry of Education agrees. Prosecutor says, “I have no objection to this petition for adoption.”

Judge says, “I’m granting the petition of David Jacobson and Candace Damon to adopt this child, and to legally change his name to Otis Charles Rachman Jacobson.” He bangs his gavel, comes out from behind his desk, shakes our hands and then is out the door.

We are outside hugging each other before noon.

The two of you have written your story so well that I had to scroll down to the end first, just to make sure that it had "a great ending". Actually, it is a great beginning, I am so happy for the two of you. Congratulations mom and dad!

Congratulations, David and Candace. YOU DID IT!!! You presevered, you persevered some more, you sweated, you wore those darned socks, and now you are a family.

Goodbye yearning and limbo -- hello baby boy! Now we can all let out the tears and whoops of joy.

I couldn't wait to read your entry this morning, but I actually put it off for about a half an hour. You know, the suspense of "The Judgement". Wow, if I've been anxious, what about you?! You've been so strong this past month; it wouldn't be surprising if exhaustion comes hand in hand with the relief. Hope you'll have some down time in which you can relax and let everything about this fantastic new reality wash over you.

I'M SO HAPPY for you all.
Lucky, lucky Otis Charles.

Lo

Hi There,
It's early Monday morning and I just had a wonderful time reading your blog - and feeling delighted that the big bad judge wanted his lunch so he agreed you could adopt Otis.
Really admire you guys for trying to quit the smokes in this situation. Hope you can do it. I of course smoked through almost my entire pregnancy - got the flu in my 8th month and it hurt my throat too much to smoke - so it seemed like a good time to stop. Of course I got no sympathy from Joel - who never had the nasty habit. So at least you have each other to sympathize with!
Must go - but I want to you know - we are sooooooo happy for you!

Congratulations and I am so happy for you. Please give us an idea of what is going on in the next two weeks and what your timetable is. I have Beta now (Toby and I drove her in on Saturday) and we are having a little honeymoon together. She is much more affectionate and demonstrative with me than she is with Dad.

I can't wait to meet Otis. Happy birthday Candace, you got the present you really wanted!

I'm so glad that all of the trials of the last few weeks and years have paid off so well. Otis seems like a great kid in pictures, and I'm sure he's even better in person. We look very forward to meeting him.

Yes, you did it !!!!!!!!!!

I cried like baby - I guess a combination of being happy for you, relieved in some way and aware in other that it is not over yet. And, yes, the Nova post too. David, the love that your mom has given you is not lost, and you are already passing it on to Otis. As the Chinese say we are all connected with an invisible thread....

I imagine that the count down of your time in KZ will be much easier now.

Candace, Happy Birthday! So symbolic in a way to become "officially" a mother on your birthday. You and David are a terrific team, and now that your bond has been tried in the Almaty fire, you are all geared up for parenting.

I can't get through on the phone. Celebrate these two - it's a great one!

Unfortunately another adopted child died in an abusive situation. I'm sending you a link to Moscow Times. The response is reserved, as opposed to saying that all American adoptions should be stopped.

PS. My little Birthday gift is the translation of the Furmanov plaque - it says that one of the great Kazakh poets lived in this home from 1949? - 1981. He also used to be a commissar/chief of a partisan group in Ukraine during WWII (which the Russians call the Great Patriotic War).

My best,
Milena

David,

Congratulations to you and Candace on the adoption of your baby boy. Otis is beautiful and I wish you both all the joy that parenthood brings. (Hey, I was up last night with both of my - too old to be up at night - children, and I am still joyful about it!) I have been following your blog as often as I can get to it. Looking forward to seeing Otis.

Tara

P.S. So sorry to hear that you are likely to die young. (I, too, have a series of strange-but-true things I have been told in Eastern Europe!)

It was great to get the news Monday morning.......
I am SO HAPPY to hear that Candace received the best B-Day present ever today !!! (I'm sure Patrick will 2nd that !)

Of course we were all thinking that would be just wonderful, when we heard your court date would be today.

(This is not to say, of course, that DJ doesn't give nice jewelry gifts on such occasions....)

Celebrate all your hard work up to this point & all the happiness you must be feeling !

All the best,
Cynthia

PS DJ -- We ran into Ralph on Sunday afternoon AND I had the premium popcorn hat from San Diego on !!! hahaha : )

I assume that all this technology works both ways, and this message will
land where it's meant to . . .

Tessa is our house technical expert, but she's in still in bed and you
don't wake a sleeping tigresse. She is also of course the one who
monitors your blog here, and she says it's addictive. Every few days
I'm given a briefing on the Almaty Situation, and occasionally asked to
view a photo. It is nice to keep in touch this way, I have to say.
Sounds to me that things are mostly going pretty well, and you're having
the experience of a lifetime. I've wondered aloud a couple of times
whether there was a chance that somehow the final result was in question
(given some of the frustration that comes across on the blog, the nature
of these remote post-Soviet regimes, and some recent ad news about
adoptions in Albania, of all places), but Tessa, who's keeping up with
things, assures me every time that it will most certainly turn out
happy. I guess from the news this morning that any and all doubts are
vanquished. Congratulations from both of us to you!

And and Candace, Happy Birthday! What a terrific gift. Can't wait to
see the little guy back here. (By the way, if I remember rightly,
you're back on the 6th of August, Hiroshima Day, but we're away until
the 10th or so, which means that we'll probably be part of the second
wave of gawkers and celebrants dropping in to see you -- in case you
start wondering.)

I guess Tessa will find a technically more sophisticated way of chiming
in, but for me, at this hour, this e-mail will have to do.

All the best,

Dan (and Tessa)

Yeah, baby! Tonight is the Home Run Derby, and it looks like you two -- er, three -- are the winners!

It will certainly be difficult ever to top this particular birthday...

Perhaps you'd be well served to spend your remaining Otis-free time in KZ making out a schedule for all of your fans so that you and the O Man won't be too overfeted all at once. (I, of course, will be over the minute you're back to help you review the schedule.)

We lurve you.
