Apparently, this whole square was the current President’s idea (see this section of fence for a picture of him) and was inspired by a visit he made to Egypt. I, for one, see no connection to Egypt… Mussolini’s Italy, maybe. The current configuration of the square and the monument were designed by a local architect named Shota Valikhanov. It seems to have been built about 10 years ago.
